Day 152 of 366: Capturing Vivid Sydney from the Harbour
An Evening on the Harbour:
Last night, I took the opportunity to sail around Sydney Harbour with Sony Alpha and Digidirect, photographing Vivid Sydney and testing some new gear. The vibrant lights and stunning installations of Vivid provided a perfect backdrop for an exciting evening of photography.
Testing New Gear:
To start, I chose the Sony A7Cr paired with a 20-70mm lens. This combination allowed me to capture wide-angle shots of the illuminated landmarks and installations. Later, I switched to a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens to zoom in on specific details and create a variety of compositions.
A Productive Night:
The night ended up being wonderfully productive, with over 200 images captured. I focused on experimenting with different angles and perspectives, aiming to capture the essence of Vivid Sydney while testing the performance of the new gear. The experience of photographing from the boat added a unique dynamic, providing constantly changing views and angles.
Quick Edits and Reflections:
Back on the boat, I did a quick edit on my iPad to review some of the shots. The images turned out beautifully, highlighting the interplay of lights and shadows on the iconic Sydney Opera House and other landmarks. The monochrome shot of the Opera House brought out the architectural details, while the colourful image captured the vibrancy of the event.
Once I return home, I’ll process the rest of the images more thoroughly. The quick edits provided a glimpse of the potential of these photos, and I’m excited to dive deeper into the editing process to bring out the best in each shot.
Reflecting on the Experience:
Photographing Vivid Sydney from the harbour was an unforgettable experience. The opportunity to test new gear in such a dynamic and visually rich environment was invaluable. The challenge of shooting from a moving boat added an extra layer of excitement and pushed me to adapt and refine my techniques.
