Day 153 of 366: From Vivid Sydney to the Wild Seas of Gerringong

Returning Home:

After spending two exciting nights shooting Vivid Sydney, I headed back home, pleased with the results I had captured. The vibrant lights and dynamic scenes of the city provided an incredible backdrop for testing new techniques and equipment. With a treasure trove of images to edit, I was looking forward to reviewing the shots.

A Wild Sea at Werri Beach:

As I drove into Gerringong, I noticed the sea was particularly wild. Deciding to stop off at Werri Beach, I aimed to capture the waves breaking across the headland near the rock pool. The heavy rain added a dramatic element to the scene. As I watched the waves crash, I saw a lone surfer heading out across the rocks, preparing to jump straight into the swell.

Capturing the Moment:

Quickly hopping out of the car, I managed to capture the scene. The powerful waves and the lone surfer made for a compelling image, showcasing the raw energy of the ocean and the bravery of the surfer. The heavy rain and overcast sky created a moody atmosphere, perfect for a monochrome shot.

Editing and Reflections:

Back home, I faced the mammoth task of editing the photos from Vivid Sydney and today's capture. The vibrant colours of Vivid required careful adjustments to enhance their impact, while today's image at Werri Beach called for a different approach. The flat colours of the rainy day led me to convert the image to monochrome, which brought out the textures and contrasts beautifully.

The monochrome edit emphasized the dramatic waves and the determination of the surfer, creating a powerful and timeless image. The lack of colour did not detract from the scene; instead, it highlighted the raw and elemental nature of the moment.

Reflecting on the Experience:

Today’s photography journey, from the vibrant and controlled environment of Vivid Sydney to the wild and unpredictable seas of Gerringong, reminded me of the diverse beauty and challenges that nature and urban landscapes offer. Each setting has its unique appeal and requires different techniques and perspectives.
