Day 272 of 366: Chasing Rainbows at Werri Beach

The Unplanned Journey

Today was one of those serendipitous afternoons that remind me why I'm so drawn to photography—why it’s more than just a hobby or profession, but a passion that continuously reconnects me with the ever-changing moods of nature. After the routine of milking at the dairy, I packed up my gear with no specific plan in mind, just the urge to capture something memorable.

The Unexpected Sight

As I drove towards Gerringong, a splash of colours caught my eye—a rainbow, seemingly painted across the clouds, a rare spectacle that instantly commanded my attention. Knowing how fleeting these moments can be, I redirected my course to Werri Beach, driven by the hope of capturing this ephemeral beauty.

Racing Against Time

Arriving at the beach, I could see the rainbow was already beginning to fade. The urgency was palpable. I switched to my preferred lens for capturing wide landscapes, hurried onto the sand, and managed to snap a few shots. Each frame was a race against time, trying to immortalize the rainbow before it vanished completely.

A Fading Beauty

Though the rainbow faded quickly, it left behind a rich canvas. The remaining light cast a dramatic glow on the turbulent waves, creating a perfect backdrop that highlighted the transient nature of the scene. The contrast between the dark, looming clouds and the bright edges of the fading rainbow created a visual reminder of nature's fleeting artworks.

Reflections on the Day

Today’s experience was a profound reminder that beauty is often ephemeral, and as a photographer, I am not just a witness but a chronicler of these fleeting moments. The rainbow might have faded, but the chase was a vivid portrayal of why I continue to explore and appreciate the natural world. Each shot captured not just a scene, but a story of that day—the story of a race against time and light, of beauty found in unexpected places, and of the sheer joy of discovery.

As I look back at the photos, I'm reminded of the importance of being present, of being ready to capture the world not as we planned, but as it unfolds. Today, I didn't just chase a rainbow; I lived a moment that I will cherish through the images I took, a colourful whisper from nature that was here for a moment and then gone, leaving nothing but memories and digital imprints.
