Day 249 of 366: A Sunset to Remember at Gerroa
An Unplanned Detour
Sometimes, the best photographic moments come from the unexpected shifts in plans. After a morning spent capturing the delicate dance of time in a motion lapse while milking, I had set my sights on capturing the sunset in Kiama. However, the landscape photography gods had other ideas. The clouds, heavy and brooding to the south, refused to cooperate, not aligning as I had hoped against the scenic backdrops of Kiama.
Chasing the Light
Not one to be deterred by a challenge, I noticed a break in the clouds to the west and decided to change course, heading back to Gerroa. My decision was rewarded. Just as I arrived, the last rays of the sun crested the horizon, setting the stage for what would become one of the most memorable sunsets of this year.
The Magic of 7 Mile Beach
As I wandered around Little Beach, capturing various angles, my attention was caught by the grandeur of 7 Mile Beach's reflections. The water mirrored the fiery sky above, creating a canvas of vivid colours on the sand below. Wading through the shallow water, I positioned myself to capture this natural spectacle, where the beach became a mirror, reflecting the blaze of the sunset.
A Serendipitous Capture
The resulting images from this serendipitous evening speak to the unpredictable beauty of nature and the rewards of adaptability. What began as a frustration at Kiama turned into a triumph at Gerroa. The reflections captured not only the beauty of the sunset but also the essence of patience and flexibility in photography.
Reflections on the Day
This day reaffirmed a valuable lesson: in both life and photography, sometimes the best-laid plans need to be cast aside for the opportunities that arise spontaneously. The breathtaking sunset at Gerroa was a reminder of why I pursue this art form—capturing moments like these, where time seems to stand still and nature puts on a show that leaves one in awe.
