Day 247 of 366: Capturing the Gentle Giants
A Serendipitous Encounter with Whales
Today's photographic journey started off at Werri Beach, bathed in the gentle warmth of the early afternoon sun. The low tide revealed a canvas of vibrant green moss on the rocks, setting a picturesque scene right at the water's edge. After a brief visit back home to capture the lively buzz of bees around blooming wisteria, I ventured out again to Kiama Heights, spurred by a wimp of the possibility of whales.
The Challenge of Drone Photography
Equipped with my drone, I set out to capture these majestic sea creatures. Adhering to wildlife guidelines, I carefully maneuverer the drone to maintain a safe distance, which presented a thrilling challenge: spotting and tracking the whales from a considerable height without disturbing them. The clear skies and crisp air provided optimal conditions for flying, but locating the whales amidst the vast ocean tested both my patience and piloting skills.
The Rewarding Shot
After several attempts and adjustments to the drone’s position, I captured a mesmerizing scene: a pair of whales gliding gracefully just beneath the water's surface. The clarity of the ocean allowed for a distinct view of their massive forms, creating a stunning visual contrast against the deep blue of the surrounding sea.
Reflections on a Memorable Day
Choosing today's image was easy. It not only showcases the clarity of the water and the distinct shapes of the whales but also encapsulates the essence of nature photography—patience, respect for the subject, and a bit of luck. Today was a reminder of the wonders that await when we take the time to explore and appreciate the natural world around us. This encounter with the whales off Kiama Heights was not just a highlight of my photographic endeavours but an unforgettable experience that deepened my connection with nature.
