Day 160 of 366: Capturing an Epic Sunset over Gerringong
A Day at the Exhibition: Today was a day spent showcasing my exhibition at the Gerringong Library and Museum. After a fulfilling day, I ventured out in the evening to capture the sunset. With promising cloud cover, I was hopeful for a display of vibrant colours. Little did I know, I was in for an epic treat.
Choosing the Perfect Moment: The featured photo is a stunning panorama taken just before I landed the drone for the night. It captures the fiery hues of the sunset illuminating the sky over Gerringong, with the coastline and town bathed in the soft, warm glow of the fading light. The scene is breathtaking, highlighting the beauty of the South Coast of NSW.
Drone Photography Adventure: For this shoot, I used my drone to capture multiple locations as the sun was setting. I started in the middle of Werri Beach, moved to Werri Lagoon, and finally headed up to the cemetery. Using two drone batteries, I took numerous shots as the light continuously changed. This particular image is a panorama, stitched together to encompass the most dramatic part of the sunset.
Enhancing the Sunset: In post-processing, I focused on enhancing the vibrant colours of the sunset while maintaining the natural beauty of the landscape. I used Adobe Lightroom for adjustments, primarily increasing the saturation and contrast to bring out the fiery tones in the sky. I also applied a gradient filter to balance the exposure across the panorama, ensuring both the sky and the foreground were well-lit and detailed.
Lessons from the Evening: Today's shoot was a powerful reminder of the ever-changing nature of light and how it can transform a scene. The dynamic conditions required patience and adaptability, which are crucial skills in landscape photography. The session was both challenging and rewarding, adding a stunning chapter to my 366-day project.
