Day 158 of 366:The Arrival of a Wintery East Coast Low

Today, the weather was dominated by a classic wintery East Coast low. The rain began pouring down last night, delivering 100 mm of rainfall overnight, and continued relentlessly throughout the day. With such inclement weather, traveling anywhere for a photoshoot wasn’t a feasible option. However, my daily commitment to capturing a photo still stood, and I was determined to find a compelling subject even in these conditions.

Searching for the Perfect Subject

From the shelter of my veranda, I scanned the landscape, seeking something that would encapsulate the mood of the day. The heavy, grey sky and the persistent rain created a sombre yet serene atmosphere. It was then that the crab apple tree in our yard caught my eye. Almost completely stripped of its leaves, the tree’s bare branches stood out starkly against the dreary backdrop. The few remaining leaves clung tenaciously, and patches of moss added a touch of texture and colour to the scene.

Capturing the Essence of Winter

The sight of the crab apple tree, with its skeletal branches and resilient moss, perfectly embodied the essence of winter. It was a simple yet powerful image, reflecting both the harshness and beauty of the season. The contrast between the dark, intricate branches and the soft, grey sky created a striking visual, highlighting the tree’s resilience in the face of winter’s chill.

The Editing Process

After capturing several shots, I began the editing process. I aimed to enhance the natural textures and contrasts that initially drew me to the tree. The goal was to maintain the raw, untouched feel of the scene while highlighting the delicate details of the branches and the subtle hues of the remaining leaves and moss.
