Reflecting on a Year of Photography: My Top 50 Images of 2024
As 2024 comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on what has been an extraordinary year in my photographic journey. It started with a bold challenge: a 366-day photography project—a leap-year twist for my creative process. Initially, I wondered if I’d last a few months, let alone the entire year. Yet here I am, with thousands of photos captured and memories etched into every pixel.
The Challenge: A Daily Discipline
The idea of committing to a photo every day for a year was daunting. Some days, inspiration struck like lightning, and the images came effortlessly. On others, I had to dig deep to find a subject, often pushing myself to capture something meaningful. The journey was about persistence as much as creativity. Each day offered a chance to see the world anew, from grand landscapes to subtle, everyday moments.
By year’s end, I had taken around 20,000 photographs. Editing through the images was equally challenging, with roughly 1,500 completed edits—and many more waiting their turn. But the process of selecting and refining each image has been immensely rewarding, giving me a deeper appreciation for the nuances of light, color, and composition.
The Top 50: A Celebration of Diversity
When I initially thought about sharing my favourite images from this project, I planned to limit myself to just 20. But as I began reviewing my work, I realized how difficult it was to narrow it down. There were over 100 contenders that I genuinely loved, each one representing a unique story or moment from the year. Ultimately, 20 became 50—a collection that I’m thrilled to share.
These top 50 images span a wide range of subjects and locations. From serene sunrises captured with my DJI Osmo Pocket 3 to motion lapses at stunning coastal locations like Boat Harbour Gerringong, each photo is a testament to the beauty I’ve found throughout the year. The collection is as much about the journey as it is about the photographs themselves.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next?
As I move into 2025, I’ve decided not to embark on another 365-day project. However, that doesn’t mean I’ll be putting my camera down. Quite the opposite—there are so many places I planned to visit this year but couldn’t fit into the schedule. Those destinations are now at the top of my list for the coming months. Photography will remain a constant in my life, though with a bit more flexibility and focus on quality over quantity.
