Day 14: Capturing the Storm's Serenity at Surf Beach
I found me once again at the Old Fire Station in Kiama, tending to my exhibition—a labor of love and a display of my photographic journey. With the weather brewing, I felt the pull of the sea and made my way to Surf Beach, eager to capture the tumultuous beauty of the elements at play.
The beach presented itself shrouded in the drama of an impending storm, the sky a canvas of ominous clouds, the sea swelling with a restless energy. It was in these conditions that I chose to work with my ND filters, setting up for a long exposure that would smooth the water's surface and reveal the colours of the ocean in a way that the naked eye could never perceive.
As I steadied my camera against the maelstrom, the ND filter allowed me to extend the shutter speed, turning the frenzied dance of the waves into a hauntingly calm tableau. The water, with each surge, became a painter's stroke on the shoreline, sweeping the sand and sculpting the coast anew.
The resulting image was one of stillness amidst chaos, a juxtaposition that photography affords the patient observer. The rough swell that pounded the shore, dragging grains of sand into the depths of the ocean, was rendered into a peaceful haze, its power implied but unseen.
This project, which daily pushes me to explore new techniques and perspectives, has taught me to find peace in the storm, to appreciate the raw beauty of nature—even when it shows its might. Each day is a new canvas, and today, the storm at Surf Beach painted a scene of serenity in its wake.
Join me as I continue to navigate through the varying faces of nature, capturing moments of tranquility in the tempest of life.
