Day 107 of 366: The Art of Bokeh at Werri Beach

On the 107th day of my photographic journey, I found myself returning to the familiar sands of Werri Beach. This place, so often a subject through my lens, once again beckoned me to witness the day's birth. But this morning was different. Instead of seeking the grand landscapes or the delicate details I so often pursue, my focus turned to the abstract, to the interplay of light and blur, to the dance of bokeh.

The Intimacy of Sunrise

Sunrise is an intimate affair. It's the world's gentle emergence from the cloak of night, a celestial spectacle of hues and tones that flirt with the horizon. At Werri Beach, with the ocean as its stage, each sunrise feels like a private performance to which I am the sole invitee.

The Creative Spark

As the sun crested the watery edge of the world, I had my long lens trained on the distant horizon. But it was when the sharpness faded, and the world turned into a canvas of colourful orbs that the real magic happened. It was the unintended effect of unfocused light that caught my attention—a beautiful bokeh that transformed the ordinary into the ethereal.

The Dance of Light

Bokeh is the poetry of photography, a way to compose with the light itself. With a simple twist of the focus ring, I let my camera drink in the sunrise not as a sharp image but as a symphony of soft, glowing circles. The result was captivating, turning the vastness of the ocean and the grandeur of the sunrise into an intimate display of abstract art.

Embracing Simplicity

Sometimes, simplicity holds the most profound beauty. The unfocused shapes, each a blurred echo of the sun's rising disc, formed a pattern of light on the sea's canvas. It was a reminder that sometimes, we need to lose focus to see the beauty that precision can't capture.

The Result

The photographs from this morning's experiment are less about the landscape and more about feeling. They invite the viewer to interpret, to feel the warmth of the sun without seeing its defining edges, to understand the morning's tranquility without the detail of the waves.

Reflecting on the Process

Today, I embraced a different kind of creativity. It was not about the tools or the technique but about allowing a moment to evolve into something unexpected. It was about letting go of control, switching to manual focus, and allowing a very simple idea to take root and flourish into something stunning.

The Beauty of Blur

In this world of hyper-focus and relentless clarity, there’s a special place for the beauty of the blur. These images are a celebration of that—of the softness, the undefined, and the potential that lies in every unfocused moment waiting to be discovered.

Join the Journey

I invite you to join me on the blog as I delve into the beauty of bokeh, the allure of abstraction, and the surprising simplicity that sunrise at Werri Beach revealed. It’s a journey into the less tangible aspects of photography, where emotion and light play the lead roles.
