Day 105 of 366: The Aerial Abstraction of Blackhead, Gerroa

Day 105 in the year-long photographic odyssey brought with it the familiar rush of daily commitments, but as the sun began its descent, I broke free, camera in tow, to capture the closing act of the day. The destination was once again the scenic Blackhead in Gerroa, a place where the ocean's might meets the earth's stoicism. But this evening’s pursuit was one for the skies—through the bird’s eye of my trusty drone.

A Divergence from the Routine

The final hours before sunset offer a unique softness of light, a brief period where the world seems to hold its breath in anticipation of nightfall. It was in this tranquillity that I launched my drone towards a cluster of rocks amidst the sea—an ensemble I had eyed the day prior, ripe for an abstract capture.

In Search of the Abstract

The allure of abstraction lies in its ability to distil complexity into simplicity, to find order in chaos, and to present the familiar in unfamiliar ways. The rocks of Blackhead, weathered and shaped by the relentless sea, promised just that—an opportunity to transform the natural into the artistic.

From the Sky’s Perspective

As the drone ascended, the headland and its secrets unfolded below. There’s a unique clarity that comes with altitude—a realization that what may seem random on the ground falls into fascinating patterns from above. The headland, with its rugged allure, was no exception.

The Unexpected Discovery

During my aerial exploration, I stumbled upon a natural pool etched into the headland, a feature I had photographed before from the land but never from the air. Through the drone’s lens, this pool became an abstract piece, its still waters a stark contrast to the textured rock face and the undulating sea beyond.

The Revelation in Editing

Back home, the editing process is always a time of revelation, a moment where the day’s work reveals its secrets. The anticipated image of the rock formation, while intriguing, fell short of my compositional expectations. However, the pool, with its definitive edge and the interface of rock and water, emerged as the clear protagonist of the day’s narrative.

Striking Abstraction

The image of the pool was a symphony of shapes and textures, a dance of light and shadow. It was as if nature itself had composed an abstract painting, using elements in their rawest forms to create something that beckoned for a deeper gaze.

Day 105’s Reflection

Today reminded me of the power of perspective and the serendipity of the artistic process. What we overlook or dismiss one day can become the focal point of our admiration the next. It's a valuable lesson in the constant evolution of vision and creativity, and a testament to the surprises that await when we dare to look at the world from a different angle.

The Continuation of the Journey

As I share this abstracted vision with you, I invite you to step into a world where the lines between reality and art blur, where the natural landscape becomes a canvas for the imagination. It’s here, in the abstraction of Blackhead’s headland, that we find a new appreciation for the beauty that is both seen and unseen.
